John Ritchie of Vom Boden: A Wild Bunch Off-Fair Tasting (Friday, March 6, 5-8pm), $20
In the world of German wine, New York-based importer Vom Boden has changed the game, and represent some of the best winemakers across Deutschland. We have been championing German wines for most of our existence, and we’re thrilled to be hosting John Ritchie for a pre-Wild Bunch tasting.
We’ve selected some of our absolute favorite wines (mostly Rieslings) from the Vom Boden portfolio, spanning a range of styles and regions. We have the last bottles of some of these available in Portland, just for this event, and we have a couple of bonus add-ons for those of you who might wanna try some unicorns at very reasonable prices.
Here’s the line-up:
Philip Lardot, 2023 “Save the Mosel” Teutonic Blend ($28): An experimental “vineyard project” wine that’s part of a series dedicated to helping young winemakers doing cool agriculture in challenging regions.
Weingut J.B. Becker, 2022 Riesling “Wallufer Walkenberg” Spätlese Trocken ($40): From the sartorially-inclined, moustachioed HaJo Becker, who’s been vinifying Prädikat wines to dryness since the 70s.
Weingut Julian Haart, 2023 Riesling “Rote Erden” ($56): This is a bottle from red-slate parcels in Klaus Peter Keller’s Grosses Gewächs vineyards in the Rheinhessen….sooooo from a trade that Julian and Nadine did with their legendary mentor!
Weingut Stein, 2024 Riesling “Alfer Hölle 1900” Kabinett Trocken ($76): This is from the second-oldest vineyard in the Mosel, planted in 1900.
Weingut Vollenweider, 2023 Riesling “Goldgrube” Grosslagen Trocken ($72): A Grand Cru Riesling from an own-rooted vineyard planted 120 years ago, with each Vine trained on the hyper-traditional upright stakes.
Wasenhaus, 2023 Spätburgunder: A Pinot Noir that punches so far above its price point it’s not even funny.
And for the bonus pours ($30 for 1.5oz pours of each), of which only a few bottles come to Oregon every year:
Weingut Wasenhaus · 2023 Spätburgunder “Bellen” ($140): The founder of Vom Boden claims this is the single best German Pinot he’s ever had.
Weingut Keller · 2023 Spätburgunder “Dalsheim Bürgel“ GG Trocken ($250): A gold label Keller, indicating a super rare single-vineyard from the world’s most famous Riesling producer.
