Riesling and Spätburgunder Study, $55

  • Ora et Labora Wine Shop 3928 North Williams Avenue Portland, OR, 97227 United States (map)

If you’ve been to Ora et Labora more than once, you know that Riesling is our jam. Certain German winegrowing regions have been farmed since the time of the Roman Empire, and in the early 21st century, the most challenging slopes are now in danger of going extinct because they’re too damned hard to farm. And yet, these wines represent some of the best value-to-quality ratio in the world, while still suffering from a misconception that Riesling is inherently sweet. Mosel, Rheinhessen, Pfalz, Kabinett, Trocken, Feinherb, Sekt, VDP, Ortswein, Gross Lage, and so on, the world of Riesling is quite complex thanks to the nature of German wine law (at least in large part). As a bonus, we’ll be talking about German Pinot as well, because frankly….if you haven’t tried it yet, we want you to.

All this to say, we’ll be decoding German wine law, history, geology, and soils, all the while enjoying eight of our favorite German wines. Dave wants you to know that of all the wine classes he teaches, this is one of his three favorites, so you should take it. Don’t make me get on my knees and plead.
