Protest pours, a speaker series

The Protest Pours series was born out of our deep interest in the intersection of wine and spirituality: simply, wine invites us to slow down, pay attention, and savor sacredness in the quotidien. We conceived Ora et Labora (“prayer and work,” the motto of the Benedictine monastic orders) as a wine bar that foregrounds the Benedictine tradition of welcoming every guest as an embodiment of the divine. Protest Pours is our attempt to dive a little bit deeper into this concept, as we explore practical theologies that can serve to ground us in hopeful rebellion.

We are sitting on a rock hurtling through space and time, and in the midst of today’s geopolitical climate, many of us are trying to make sense of a world that holds both beauty and brokenness. We thought it might be wise to bring in some local leaders from a variety of interfaith, ecumenical, and humanist traditions to share their wisdom and help us to respond to the following questions:

How can we ground ourselves in hope, liberation, and rebellion? What pragmatism can be found in the diversity of religious and spiritual traditions? How can we dialogue across belief systems, learn from other’s worldviews, and encounter humanity at its most authentic? And just as importantly–what actions can we take, individually and collectively, to resist despair and work toward a more just world?

Each Protest Pours guest will offer insights from their respective positionalities, their belief system(s), and their labors.

100% of all profits from wines sold by the glass at the event will serve to provide each guest speaker a modest honorarium, with the rest going to a charitable organization of their choice. Space is limited at these events, so please reserve your tickets in advance!
